Due to having two exams on the Friday test day we decided to do a trackday a week before the race to re-familiarise myself with the track again. The last time i raced at Oulton park was over two years ago in the Saxmax Championship when i had great results, and with this in mind i was eager to prove myself and get some good times set. We tried various setups throughout the day with both dry and damp conditions and by the end of the day it felt like i had a quick and stable car underneath me.
A week later i arrived at Oulton Park raring to put all the exam stress behind me and push myself to get a good qualifying position and good race finishes.
However as soon as i exited the pits i felt a huge vibration in the car but i knew i had to have at least 3 laps to qualify somewhere decent, and with the rain looming i decided to try and push the car for 3 laps and then come in. The vibration was so severe the car was extremely unstable even in a straight line which made it difficult to hang onto and unfortunately i didn't even complete a full lap!
On inspection we found that the wheels we had done for us hadn't been balanced and in fact some were buckled. A small mistake with big consequences for my full weekend as i would have to start from last place in both races.
So with only 1 lap under my belt it was straight into race 1 and starting from the back i had nothing to lose and was looking forward to moving up the grid. I got an OK start and was able to make up 6 places on the first lap and another 2 places on the next. Coming onto the 3rd lap i went underneath Kevin Taylor at Old Hall however the track was still a little wet there and i under steered out onto the grass. Due to the massive amounts of rain earlier in the morning the grass was waterlogged and as soon as i hit a dip in the grass it spat me off into the barriers on the inside.
A Very frustrating DNF to the point where it left me questioning my driving ability and whether having the two exams and not being able to test the day before had negatively affected me.
For race 2 the aim was to once again move up the grid but also gain a finish! Once again i made up 6 places on the first lap and was pushing hard and made up another 5 places by the 4th lap. I was in amongst a group of about 5 car all pushing hard however i was quicker than most and had to hold back on several occasions which was highly frustrating. Eventually i managed to get in front of the group and headed into Lodge corner when i heard a huge lock up behind me. I was already mid corner so just hung on and prayed that it wouldn't hit me. Unfortunately it did. Kevin Taylor had locked up from quite a way back and t-boned my car right on the rear wheel area which ended both our races.
It was a very hard hit and the damage on both cars was pretty extensive but thankfully it wasn't in the drivers door and we were both ok.
So all in all, the worst weekends racing of my life. Qualifying was ruined by a mistake from someone else. I ruined my second race by pushing too hard. And race 3 was once again ruined by a mistake from someone else- a weekend i definitely want to forget.
Mercifully I won the free entry draw, so fingers crossed if the damage on the car isn't too bad we'll make the Knockhill round in 2 weeks.
